From her emergence in 1861 to her death in 1908, the Empress Dowager, Cixi, was the most powerful figure in China. She is also perhaps the most controversial figure in modern Chinese history. Certainly part of her reputation comes from the traditional Chinese negative attitude toward female rulers. Women should not rule: “The hen does not herald the coming of the morning.”
